Trench's Synonyms: lxxxiv. κακός, πονηρός, φαῦλος.
πονηρός ponērós, pon-ay-ros'; from a derivative of G4192; hurtful, i.e. evil (properly, in effect or influence, and thus differing from G2556, which refers rather to essential character, as well as from G4550, which indicates degeneracy from original virtue); figuratively, calamitous; also (passively) ill, i.e. diseased; but especially (morally) culpable, i.e. derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners:—bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked(-ness). See also G4191.
The KJV translates Strong's G4190 in the following manner: evil (51x), wicked (10x), wicked one (6x), evil things (2x), miscellaneous (7x).
-
full of labours, annoyances, hardships
-
pressed and harassed by labours
-
bringing toils, annoyances, perils; of a time full of peril to Christian faith and steadfastness; causing pain and trouble
-
-
bad, of a bad nature or condition
-
in a physical sense: diseased or blind
-
in an ethical sense: evil wicked, bad
Referring toMat 6:13: "Although the KJV renders this 'deliver us from evil,' the presence of the article indicates not evil in general, but the evil one himself. In the context of Matthew's Gospel, such deliverance from the devil seems to be linked to Jesus' temptation in 4:1-10: Because the Spirit led him into temptation by the evil one, believers now participate in his victory" (Daniel B. Wallace, Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics, p. 233).

1. full of labors, annoyances, hardships;
a. pressed and harassed by labors; thus Hercules is called πονηροτατος καί ἄριστος, Hesiod fragment 43, 5.
b. bringing toils, annoyances, perils: (καιρός, Sir. 51:12); ἡμέρα πονηρά, of a time full of peril to Christian faith and steadfastness,
2. bad, of a bad nature or condition;
a. in a physical sense: ὀφθαλμός, diseased or blind,
b. in an ethical sense, evil, wicked, bad, etc. ("this use of the word is due to its association with the working (largely the servile) class; not that contempt for labor is thereby expressed, for such words as ἐργάτης, δραστηρ, and the like, do not take on this evil sense, which connected itself only with a word expressive of unintermitted toil and carrying no suggestion of results" (cf. Schmidt, chapter 85, § 1); see κακία, at the end); of persons:
