THE STORM IS OVER
Scripture Reading: Luke 8:22-25
But as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in jeopardy. And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then he arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. *Luke 8:23-24*
This was an encounter between Jesus and his disciples, and a storm they encountered on the Sea of Galilee. The miracles of Jesus confirm what is possible as we deal with the various challenges and situations that confront us as believers.
1. The raging storm. The first thing we notice is the raging storm. Doing something big for God can unleash storms. Anytime you attempt to do something special, expect to encounter storms of opposition. The disciples were living their normal lives until they embarked on a journey to change their location in life. Your storm may not be a sea storm. Still, it can come in the form of criticism, gossip, financial challenges, betrayals, a legal case, health challenges, physical attacks, crises in your marriage, threats, hostility, antagonism and many more.
2. The sleeping Saviour. Jesus was asleep during the storm. God often seems distant during the storms of our lives. That is the hardest part of our journey. It is the part when we don’t seem to hear from God. He may have spoken to start us on the journey and yet kept silent when all hell broke loose. The image of the sleeping Saviour gave the impression of someone who was disconnected and unconcerned.
3. The stilled storm. Jesus spoke to the storm. God will not be silent forever. He will speak to your situation. He did not converse with the situation. He just commanded it; “Peace, be still!”. May He speak those powerful words into your life today, Peace, be still’. God’s word is powerful and creative. He can call things that are not in reality. Even when a situation does not exist, He can speak it into existence.
This same Saviour is in our boat. He is in our hearts; and can bring stillness to every storm. God’s word rules over every storm in our lives.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, you rule over the storms of life. At your command, every attack against me is silenced. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
