THE VOICE OF WISDOM

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 8

Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things; For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips. Proverbs 8:6-7

All of us wonder whether an idea we have is a wise idea or not. How does wisdom sound when she speaks? Let’s look at the kinds of things that wisdom draws us to pursue.

1. Excellent things – Wisdom calls us to what is high and above. When wisdom speaks to you, she will challenge you to move from the level you are to a higher level. Wisdom constantly challenges us to excel. When you think you are the best, wisdom will tell you to be better than your best. Wisdom calls us to new heights. Any voice that gives us all manner of excuses to do the least or settle for the easiest way out is not the voice of wisdom.

Wisdom does not encourage us to stay in the same place or settle for the least level of accomplishment. When we think the task is too hard, wisdom will encourage us to stretch a bit more.

2. Right things – Wisdom calls us to what is straight and orderly. Wisdom tells us to be orderly. Wisdom will not call us to disorder and chaos. To walk in biblical wisdom, we must challenge ourselves to do what is right.

Wisdom will tell us to live our lives better according to God’s standards. Wisdom will tell us to conduct our marriages by choosing God’s way instead of our own. Wisdom will tell us to redeem our time and do things at the time when they need to be done. Wisdom will tell us to honour other people and treat them with respect, as God commands us to. Doing what is right has never been easy. God’s call to us usually means that we go in the opposite direction of our comfort and wishes.

3. Truth – Wisdom calls us to what is firm and trustworthy. Wisdom stands on solid ground. She is firmly rooted in that which is enduring. Wisdom is not shallow. It builds on a firm foundation.

Wisdom is not deceptive. It seeks honesty in our relationships. Wisdom speaks the truth. It points to that which is lasting and eternal. Wisdom tells us to follow a path that is tried and true. She will ask us to move away from shortcuts and short fixes to do enduring things.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, you are a God of excellence. Teach me to only approve of excellent things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
