MOSES’ PROTEST

Scripture Reading: Exodus 4

But he said, “O my Lord, please send by the hand of whomever else You may send.” So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and He said: “Is not Aaron the Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well. And look, he is also coming out to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.  Exodus 4:13-14

Finally, Moses made God angry with his fifth excuse. The Lord is slow to anger and forgiving, but we must not continually resist His leading. God chose to walk with Moses; however, Moses also had to choose to walk with God. The Lord waited for Moses to join Him on the mission. He patiently waited for Moses to trust Him and offered convincing proofs of His faithfulness to Moses. As Moses dragged his feet towards God, his actions frustrated the grace and goodness of the Lord.

In His anger, God appointed Aaron to be the spokesperson for Moses. He gave Moses what he wanted. However, Aaron wasn’t always helpful to Moses. Later in the wilderness, Aaron yielded to the pressure of the people in making the golden calf. Aaron and his sister Miriam were critical of Moses and his wife and brought trouble to the camp. When God, in His anger,, gives us what we selfishly want, the gift turns into a snare. One of the most painful judgments God can send is to let His people have their own way.

Reading through the book of Exodus, we see that Moses was very capable of speaking God’s words with power. He did not need Aaron to speak for him. Both in the court of Pharaoh and before the people of Israel, Moses demonstrated eloquence and power. As the story of Israel unfolded, we find Moses articulating God’s laws with clarity and authority. The Book of Deuteronomy records his magnificent farewell speech.

There are important lessons to learn from how Moses responded to God’s call.

– God’s grace will find us wherever we are – in the palace of the king or the backside of the desert.

– When God chooses us for an assignment, we must also choose to trust Him with the assignment.

– God is gracious and kind, but we must not frustrate His grace with our persistent unbelief and sin.

– When we persist and God allows us to have our way, what He gives us will be a snare to us.

– Our God will never lead us where His power can’t take us – He will be with us throughout the journey.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I choose you to be my guide. I trust you for the ability to do what you have called me to do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
