A NEEDED ASSURANCE
Scripture Reading: Exodus 4
Furthermore, the Lord said to him, “Now put your hand in your bosom.” And he put his hand in his bosom, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, like snow. And He said, “Put your hand in your bosom again.” So he put his hand in his bosom again, and drew it out of his bosom, and behold, it was restored like his other flesh. Exodus 4:6–7
The Lord gave Moses a further assurance that the Israelites would accept his mission. The second miracle of transformation that God did for Moses touched his body. Like the first miracle, this one also involved changing something harmless into something harmful and then changing it back.
Moses had to hold the rod that God had changed in his hand. The Lord had touched the rod with His power; He also had to touch the hand that would hold the rod with His power. The ancients dreaded leprosy. They had no cure for it except to banish those that the disease infected out of society – a kind of death sentence.
God chose the arm of Moses for His second sign. He asked Moses to put his arm within the folds of his upper garments. When Moses complied, his arm was afflicted with leprosy. If Moses was startled by his rod turning into a snake, this second demonstration might have been horrifying. How could he stand before Israel with his plague? Before Moses could raise a voice of protest, the Lord restored his ailing arm. By this, God showed Moses that He had the power to heal and restore even what we consider incurable.
Later on, the Lord used the arm of Moses to work many miracles. He used both the rod and the arm of Moses to bring deliverance to Israel.
Throughout the Bible, we see that the Lord used the areas He touched and transformed in the lives of His servants to serve His purposes. He uses the experiences He has delivered us out of to demonstrate His glory in us. God can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. He can also give us power over the things that terrify us.
For some of us, it may be time to put our afflicted arm back into our bosom so the Lord can heal it and use it for His glory.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, heal me of my fears and afflictions. Transform me with your power and use me for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
