WHAT DO YOU HAVE?
Scripture Reading: Exodus 4
So the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A rod.” And He said, “Cast it on the ground.” So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent, and Moses fled from it. Exodus 4:2–3
God responded to Moses’ protest. The Lord carefully listened as Moses narrated his fears and self-doubt. Instead of addressing Moses’ uncertainties, the Lord directed Moses to focus on what he had in his hand.
1. What is that in your hand?
Thankfully, the Lord was not upset by Moses’s doubts. He responded to Moses with a question. As usual, the Lord did not ask the question to learn something new from Moses. He asked the question so that Moses could discover what the Lord had already given him to verify his mandate before Israel. That means God had already given Moses the tools needed to prove that God had sent him. God uses what He has already placed within our reach to do what He has called us to do.
2. Moses had a rod in his hand.
Moses likely carried that rod with him everywhere he went. He was so used to it that he still held on to it in the presence of the Lord. He might have used the rod as a regular walking stick or a shepherd’s staff.
3. The Lord asked Moses to throw the rod out of his hand.
Immediately, Moses obeyed the Lord and his rod turned into a snake. Startled by what his rod had turned into, Moses fled. He might have been more surprised by the miracle than the sight of a snake. A shepherd in Moses’ day would be used to snakes darting in and out of his path.
God can transform an unremarkable object or ability we have into something extraordinary. When He charges us with a task, He uses what we have to do that we couldn’t do before. Not only that, but the Lord is also able to take us as we are and convert us into the champions He has called us to be.
Today, the Lord wants you to know that He has the power to transform us. If He is the one who gave us the assignment, we should trust that He has given us all we need to do His will.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, you are the Lord of all power. I acknowledge the power at work through me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
