THE LORD WILL LIFT YOU UP

Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 28:9-14

The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and carefully observe them. Deuteronomy 28:12-13

The Lord lifts up those who trust in Him. Deuteronomy 28 has a whole list of blessings the Lord promised to Israel. Those promises to Israel touched on their spiritual as well as material well-being.

The Lord promised Israel that if they walked in His ways and obeyed His commandments, He would set them apart from the other nations. The same God who promised those blessings to Israel is the God that we worship. His nature is the same. When we worship the Lord and follow His leading, He makes our lives a blessing.

The Lord promised to open His good treasure. A ‘good treasure’ is what we would call a ‘treasure house’. It is the place where God’s treasures are stored – heaven. This is similar to another promise in the New Testament in Philippians 4:19 – My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory through Christ. God’s blessings come from His good treasure.
What are the results of this promise?

1. Our land will be watered. To Israel, this promise meant that God would give them the supply of the early and latter rain. This was one of the principal means through which their land was so uncommonly fruitful.

2. We will become givers. God promised Israel that He would so nourish their ground, and so bless their toil in cultivating it, that they would become rich, and be able to lend to other nations without needing to borrow. In the New Testament, we learn that the blessing of the Lord makes us have all sufficiency so that we can be a blessing to others.

3. We will be the heads. This promise meant that Israel would keep rising and increase in wealth, power, and dignity. As believers in Christ, we are the salt and light of our world. Our Lord has made us a city that is set on a hill. We will not be hidden.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, you have set me apart for favour. I receive your blessing of promotion and an increase in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
