RELY ON GOD’S POWER
Scripture Reading: Psalm 62:1-12
Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them. God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God. *Psalm 62:10-11
Our passage in Psalm 62 focuses on power. It warns us about things we should not rely on for power and reminds us about where ultimate power resides.
1. Don’t rely on oppression. Our world sees a person who can control others as very powerful. Those in powerful positions use it to have their way. Those without power, desire to have that kind of power. The Lord warns us not to rely on oppression for power.
2. Don’t put your hope in robbery. A person who can take whatever he or she wants without accounting to anyone can be seen as powerful. People usually feel they’re powerful when they believe they can get anything they want from anyone – money, property, sex or fame. The Lord warns us not to rely on robbery for power.
3. Don’t put your trust in riches. We’ve heard it many times that money can buy everything. Having money is the not the true measure of how powerful one is. There are people who have lots of money but don’t have life all together as we would think possessing it would give us. Do you think money will make all your problems go away? I doubt it.
4. Power belongs to God. That is what God says. And that is what we must continue hearing. We must never forget it. We must keep it at the fore of our thoughts and affirm it over and again that power belongs to God.
Pharaoh heard that power belongs to God and fought against it. He ended up with destructive plagues.
Nebuchadnezzar had to learn the truth that power belongs to God in a painful way. He lost his sense of humanity and became like an animal before acknowledging whom power belongs to.
Today, there are people who easily forget this simple truth – Power belongs to God! Don’t put your confidence in riches or positions. Don’t repose your trust in the opportunities you have. Know that ALL power belongs to God.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father. I have seen, heard and know fully well that power belongs to you. Help me to never forget that. In Jesus’ name, Amen_
