The University of Bath is inviting applications for the role of Chief Operating Officer. This is a strategic leadership position based on the Bath campus, contributing directly to the University’s long-term goals and operational delivery. Who we are looking for


We are seeking a senior operations leader with a proven record of managing complex, mission-led organisations. The right candidate will combine strong commercial judgement with a commitment to public service, and be comfortable leading transformation across digital services, estates, sustainability and campus operations.

About the role


You will sit on the University Executive Board and work closely with the Vice-Chancellor and senior colleagues to shape and deliver a unified operating model. The role spans digital transformation, campus infrastructure, service delivery and sustainability, requiring both strategic oversight and hands-on leadership to ensure resilient, efficient systems that support teaching, research and student life.

You will lead teams responsible for Digital Services and Technology, Campus Infrastructure and Services, Sustainability and Space Management, Sports and the Library. A focus on future-readiness, value for money and inclusive service design is essential.

Key responsibilities


- Provide executive leadership across a wide operational portfolio
- Partner with the Vice-Chancellor and Executive Board on strategy and delivery
- Lead large-scale organisational change and service transformation
- Integrate digital, estates and sustainability initiatives into a coherent plan
- Strengthen financial stewardship, risk management and operational performance
- Build and mentor senior teams to deliver high standards and inclusive leadership
- Represent operational interests to governance bodies and external partners

Essential experience and skills


- Significant senior leadership experience in a complex organisation
- Track record of delivering strategic transformation and improving services
- Strong commercial, financial and programme-management skills
- Experience of leading diverse teams and developing leadership capability
- Credibility with senior stakeholders and boards
- Ability to balance pace with the values and public mission of a higher education institution
