JESUS SATISFIES OUR NEEDS

Scripture Reading: John 4:1-42

Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:13–14

In today’s passage, Jesus continued to explain the difference between the natural water of Jacob’s well and the living water He would give. The water that the woman had come to draw had to be obtained with hard labour in the sun.

Jesus pointed out that the spiritual water He spoke of was not something for which one had to strive with difficulty to acquire. Instead, it would bubble up from within, when a person received it.

Moreover, whoever drank the water from the well would thirst again. Surely the Samaritan woman could understand this. She had been coming out day after day to draw from the well, yet the need was never wholly met.

And so it is with all the wells of this world. Men seek their pleasure and satisfaction in earthly things, but these things cannot quench the thirst in the heart of man. However, the salvation that Christ offers, like living water, profoundly satisfies us. People who depend only on physical water will be continuously thirsty.

As Augustine said in his Confessions, “O Lord, You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless till they rest in You.”

There is an emptiness in every human being that only God can satisfy. We may fight that emptiness and try to fill it with the accumulation of knowledge, money or pleasure. No matter how much we accumulate, none of these pursuits can fulfil the quest of our hearts.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, you have made us for yourself; our hearts are restless till they rest in you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
