JESUS IS THE EXPECTED ONE

Scripture Reading: John 4:1-42

The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” Jesus told her, “I who speak to you am He.” John 4:25–26

Despite her ignorance, there was one truth this Samaritan woman knew: the Messiah was coming and would reveal the secrets of hearts. Where did she learn this truth from? We do not know, but that seed had remained buried in her heart until that very hour, and now it would bear fruit.
Like most Samaritans, the woman at the well awaited the coming of the Messiah who would finally put an end to all bickering and confusion about the spiritual life and other religious arguments between the Jews and Samaritans.

At this point, Jesus made a statement that was loaded with meaning. What Jesus said to her was literally, “I, who speak to you, AM.” There is a deep significance to the actual words of the Lord Jesus. In using the words “I AM”, He used one of the names which God applied to Himself in the Old Testament.

He said, “I AM is speaking to you,” or, in other words, “Jehovah is the one who is speaking to you.” He was announcing to her the startling truth that the One who was speaking to her was the Messiah for whom she had been looking and that He was also God Himself.

The Samaritan woman, in her exchange with this unknown Jewish Rabbi who was requesting water, had come to the startling truth of His identity. This changed her life completely. At this point, the woman put her faith in Jesus Christ and was converted. Immediately she wanted to share her faith with others. She then ran into the village and announced that she had met Christ

This is the very heart of evangelism. It is presenting God to people so that they see Him as the true need of their hearts, beyond all the other pursuits like meaning, satisfaction and fulfilment.
May you find God in a true and meaningful way just as the Samaritan woman did.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing yourself to us through Christ. I accept Him as my Lord and Saviour. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_
