THE LORD OF THE BREAKTHROUGH
Scripture Reading: 2 Samuel 5:17-21
So David went to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, “The Lord has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough of water.” Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim. *2 Samuel 5:20
Our God is the Lord of the Breakthrough. This was how David called the Lord after defeating the Philistines in his first battle after he was made king over all Israel.
The Philistines attacked David after he was anointed as king. For years, David had taken refuge in Philistine territories when he was hiding from Saul. In the years David lived in their land, the Philistines rarely attacked David. They did not see him as a threat to them. The moment he was anointed as king, they attacked him.
The anointing on David’s life occasioned the attack on him. There’s something to learn from this. When God anoints you for anything, it will draw out enemy forces that you thought were at peace with you. The anointing attracts attacks.
The attack put David into a defensive mode. He went to hide in a stronghold. From the stronghold, he inquired of the Lord and got the all clear from the Lord.
The Philistines showed up with a large army in the valley of Rephaim. They seemed better armed and had larger numbers, but the Lord gave the victory to David. The armies of Israel went against the Philistine army, broke through their battle lines and totally overran them.
In this battle, David discovered God in a new dimension as the ‘Master of breakthroughs’ or ‘Lord of the Breakthrough’.
- God controls all the aspects of the ‘Breakthrough Process’ – from the beginning to the end.
- God has plans for the breakthrough.* He has the strategy to give us the breakthrough.
- God executes breakthroughs.* He brings the breakthroughs to pass.
When it comes to breaking through obstacles, there is none to compare to our Lord. He can turn certain defeat and failure into a breakthrough moment.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, you are the Lord of the Breakthrough. Let your power shatter every evil force around me. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*
