LEAD ME TO THE ROCK

Scripture Reading: Psalm 61:1-8

From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a shelter for me, A strong tower from the enemy. *Psalm 61:2-3

Finding shelter in a storm is one of the cosiest feelings there is. One of the pleasant memories I have of my childhood is being safe at home during a rainstorm. God has a place to shelter his people when they go through storms. That is the message of today’s verse.

David wrote this Psalm to show us where to turn when we feel overburdened by life’s problems. The psalmist used two phrases to describe how he felt.

1. Firstly, he described where he found himself as ‘the end of the earth’.  That meant he felt isolated and far away from God. Our challenges can make us feel alone and distant from God’s help. Especially, when we have prayed repeatedly about a situation without results. Do you feel abandoned as David felt when he wrote the words of this Psalm?

2. Secondly, the Psalmist said that his ‘heart is overwhelmed’.  David felt as if darkness had covered or engulfed him. He felt as if he was drowning under a flood of problems. That must have been a difficult place to be.

How did David respond to how he was feeling?

David cried to God. That means David spoke to God about what he was going through. He lifted his voice in prayer to the Lord. That is how we should also respond to challenges, when we feel we are going down and God is far from us. Instead of crying within ourselves or to people who care little about us, we must talk to the Lord.

David prayed for God to lead him to the rock that is higher than himself. Even in anguish, David knew that what he needed was the leading of the Lord. He prayed for God to lead him to His place of safety. There is a shelter for God’s people. May you find it in your day of trial.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, you are my Rock and my Shelter. Lead me to your place of deliverance and safety. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_
