THE BLESSING OF GODLINESS

Scripture Reading: Psalm 4

But know that the Lord has set apart for Himself him who is godly; The Lord will hear when I call to Him. Psalm 4:3

This verse is a response to the questions of verse two. After David had asked ‘how long?’, he went ahead to provide an answer to his question. In verse three, David calls on his accusers not to forget God’s commitment to those who live for Him.

The Lord sets the godly apart.

The verb translated ‘set apart’ means for someone to select you for favourable treatment. It conveys the idea that God picks out those who live for Him and rewards them. In making that statement, David was encouraging himself in the Lord. He was also making a declaration to all those who opposed him. Like David, we must also remember that when we live godly lives, the Lord sets His eyes on us.

The godly belong to God.

The word ‘godly’ is translated from a Hebrew word meaning ‘loyal, devoted, pious.’ Under the Law, the godly were those who lived according to God’s commandments. Under grace, the godly are those who have made Jesus Christ their Lord and live by faith in His word. Though godliness in the New Testament is by grace, it must be manifested by good works. Like David, we must live with the firm assurance that because we belong to Christ, no one can destroy us. They will try but, they cannot succeed.

God hears the prayer of the godly.

Finally, David declares his confidence in God hearing his prayer. Prayer is the language of faith. It is an opportunity God has given us on earth to make a connection with our Father in heaven. Through prayer, we bridge the gap between the natural and the spiritual – between man and God.

Though we may not have any physical evidence that God is listening to us, He does. When we address our concerns to the Lord, He pays attention to what is on our hearts. Not only that, but He also causes sequences of events to work in our favour. That is how God manifests His will in our lives.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, your grace has set me apart for honour. I know you hear me when I call on you. In Jesus’ name, *Amen.*_
