Titus 1

English Standard Version (ESV)

Back to Bible
Paul, a servant[1] of God andⓐ an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect andⓑ their knowledge of the truth,ⓒ which accords with godliness,
ⓓ in hope of eternal life, which God,ⓔ who never lies,ⓕ promisedⓖ before the ages began[2]
andⓗ at the proper time manifested in his word[3] ⓘ through the preachingⓙ with which I have been entrustedⓚ by the command of God our Savior;
To Titus,ⓛ my true child inⓜ a common faith: ⓝGrace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
ⓞ This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, andⓟ appoint elders in every town as I directed you —
ⓠ if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife,[4] and his children are believers[5] and not open to the charge ofⓡ debauchery or insubordination.
For an overseer,[6] ⓢ as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must notⓣ be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violentⓤ or greedy for gain,
but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy,ⓥ and disciplined.
He mustⓦ hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction inⓧ sound[7] doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
For there are many who are insubordinate,ⓨ empty talkers and deceivers, especially those ofⓩ the circumcision party.[8]
They must be silenced, sinceⓐ they are upsetting whole families by teachingⓑ for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.
ⓒ One of the Cretans,[9] a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”[10]
This testimony is true. Thereforeⓓ rebuke themⓔ sharply, that theyⓕ may be sound in the faith,
ⓖ not devoting themselves to Jewish myths andⓗ the commands of peopleⓘ who turn away from the truth.
ⓙ To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled andⓚ unbelieving, nothing is pure; but bothⓛ their minds and their consciences are defiled.
ⓜ They profess to know God, but theyⓝ deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient,ⓞ unfit for any good work.
