Mark 12
Ready to read
1
And he was saying, "Jesus, [please] remember me when You come into Your kingdom!"
2
Jesus said to him, "I assure you and most solemnly say to you, today you will be with Me in[9] Paradise."
3
It was now about the sixth hour (noon), and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.),
4
because the sun was[10] obscured; and the veil [of the Holy of Holies] of the temple was[11] torn in two [from top to bottom].
5
And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit!" Having said this, He breathed His last.
6
Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he began praising and honoring God, saying, "Certainly this Man was innocent."
7
All the crowds who had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had happened, began to return [to their homes], beating their breasts [as a sign of mourning or repentance].
8
And all His acquaintances and the women who had accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, watching these things.
9
A man named Joseph, who was a member of the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court), a good and honorable man
10
(he had not consented to the Council's plan and action) a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for and expecting the kingdom of God;
11
this man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
12
And [after receiving permission] he took it down and wrapped it in a linen [burial] cloth and laid Him in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had yet been laid.
13
It was the day of preparation [for the Sabbath], and the Sabbath was dawning.
14
Now the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed [closely], and saw the tomb and how His body was laid.
15
Then they went back and prepared spices and ointments and sweet-smelling herbs. And on the Sabbath they rested in accordance with the commandment [forbidding work].
16
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared [to finish anointing the body].
17
And they found the [large, circular] stone rolled back from the tomb,
18
but when they went inside, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
19
While they were perplexed and wondering about this, suddenly, two men in dazzling clothing stood near them;
20
and as the women were terrified and were bowing their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why are you looking for the living One among the dead?
21
He is not here, but has risen. Remember how He told you, while He was still in Galilee,
22
saying that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise [from death to life]."
23
And they remembered His words,
24
and after returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven [apostles] and to all the rest.
25
Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna [the wife of Chuza, Herod's steward] and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.
26
But their report seemed to them like idle talk and nonsense, and they would not believe them.
27
But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping [at the small entrance] and looking in, he saw only the linen[1] wrappings; and he went away, wondering about what had happened.
28
And then, that very day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, which was about[2] seven miles from Jerusalem.
29
And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place.
30
While they were talking and discussing it, Jesus Himself came up and began walking with them.
31
But their eyes were [miraculously] prevented from recognizing Him.
32
Then Jesus asked them, "What are you discussing with one another as you walk along?" And they stood still, looking brokenhearted.
33
One of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, "Are you the only stranger visiting Jerusalem who is unaware of the things which have happened here in these [recent] days?"
34
He asked, "What things?" And they replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people,
35
and how the chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him.
36
But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel and set our nation free. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.
37
And also some of the women among us shocked us. They were at the tomb early in the morning,
38
and they did not find His body. Then they came back, saying that they had even seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive!
39
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women had said, but they did not see Him."
40
Then Jesus said to them, "O foolish men, and slow of heart to trust and believe in everything that the prophets have spoken!
41
Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and [only then to] enter His glory?"
42
Then beginning with Moses and [throughout] all the [writings of the] prophets, He explained and interpreted for them the things referring to Himself [found] in all the Scriptures.
43
Then they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as if He were going farther.
44
But they urged Him [not to go on], saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening, and the day has just about ended." So He went inside to stay with them.
