^{Haggai 1:1 [2]} Amos was from the Southern Kingdom, Judah, but his message of divine judgment was primarily directed to the Northern Kingdom, Israel.

^{Haggai 1:4 [3]} Hazael ruled from Damascus (842-796 B.C.) as king of Aram (Syria). He was an important official in the court of Hadadezer whom he assassinated and then succeeded.
