Hosea 10

Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

Back to Bible
Israel is a lush [1] vine; ⓝ it yields fruit for itself. The more his fruit increased, the more he increased the altars. ⓐ The better his land produced, the better they made the sacred pillars. ⓑ
Their hearts are devious; [2] ⓒ now they must bear their guilt. ⓓ The LORD will break down their altars ⓔ and demolish their sacred pillars.
In fact, they are now saying, “We have no king! For we do not fear the LORD. ⓕ What can a king do for us?”
They speak mere words, taking false oaths while making covenants. ⓖ So lawsuits break out like poisonous weeds in the furrows of a field. ⓗ
The residents of Samaria ⓘ will have anxiety over the calf ⓙ of Beth-aven. ⓚ Indeed, its idolatrous priests rejoiced over it; the people will mourn over it, over its glory. ⓛ It will certainly go into exile.
The calf itself will be taken to Assyria ⓜ as an offering to the great king. [3] ⓝ Ephraim will experience shame; ⓐ Israel will be ashamed of its counsel. ⓑ
Samaria’s king will disappear [4] ⓒ like foam [5] on the surface of the water.
The high places ⓓ of Aven, the sin of Israel, ⓔ will be destroyed; thorns and thistles will grow over their altars. ⓕ They will say to the mountains, ⓖ “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!” ⓗ
Israel, you have sinned since the days of Gibeah; ⓘ they have taken their stand there. Will not war against the unjust overtake them in Gibeah?
I will discipline ⓙ them at my discretion; ⓚ nations will be gathered against them to put them in bondage [6] for their double iniquity. ⓛ
Ephraim is a well-trained calf ⓜ that loves to thresh, but I will place a yoke on [7] her fine neck. ⓝ I will harness Ephraim; ⓐ Judah will plow; Jacob will do the final plowing.
Sow righteousness for yourselves ⓑ and reap faithful love; break up your unplowed ground. ⓒ It is time to seek the LORD ⓓ until he comes ⓔ and sends righteousness on you like the rain. ⓕ
You have plowed wickedness and reaped injustice; ⓖ you have eaten the fruit of lies. ⓗ Because you have trusted in your own way [8] and in your large number of soldiers, ⓘ
the roar of battle will rise against your people, and all your fortifications will be demolished ⓙ in a day of war, like Shalman’s destruction of Beth-arbel. Mothers will be dashed to pieces along with their children. ⓚ
So it will be done to you, Bethel, ⓛ because of your extreme evil. At dawn the king of Israel will be totally destroyed.
