AN INTERESTING CONVERSATION
Scripture Reading: Luke 24:1-27
But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?” Luke 24:16-17
The two disciples of Jesus on the road to Emmaus were so engrossed in their sadness that they could not recognize the Lord’s presence with them. They knew another traveller had joined them, but any idea that Jesus could be walking with them was far from their minds. As the Lord listened to their intense discussion, He asked the two disciples a natural question. “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”
Jesus did not ask a threatening question. He asked a question that showed that He was interested in what the disciples were talking about. He showed concern for their feelings of sadness. Our Lord Himself well knew the subject of their conversation and the cause of their sorrow. Yet, He asked them to speak for themselves.
Frequently in the Bible, when God appeared to people, He would ask them a question. He asked Adam, ‘Where are you?’ He asked Cain, ‘Where is your brother?’ And to Hagar, the Lord asked, ‘Where are you going?’ The Lord does not ask us questions to learn from us. He asks us questions to help us learn about ourselves and our relationship with Him.
Jesus wanted to tell His two disciples that He was alive. However, instead of blurting out the information, the Lord wanted His disciples to be part of the discovery. The Lord wanted them to unveil the truth layer by layer.
Take time and think about all the questions in your heart. Could it be that the Lord has placed those questions in your heart to help you know Him better? Today, you may have questions about why God allowed something unpleasant to happen in your life. You may be feeling so disappointed about events in your life.
Can you hear Jesus asking you, ‘What kind of conversation is this that you’re having and are sad?’ He wants you to tell Him the things bothering you. He is interested in what you’re going through, and He wants to help you to experience Him personally.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I know you are always speaking to me. Help me to recognize your voice at all times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
